Join Freemasonry Today

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations, tracing its origins to the medieval stonemasons who built Europe’s cathedrals and castles. Many well-known Masonic traditions come from this period, when travelling craftsmen used specific signs, grips and words to prove their skills and distinguish themselves from unqualified builders.

Today, Freemasonry uses these historic building analogies to teach members how to lead responsible, purposeful lives that contribute to their communities. While medieval stonemasons wore aprons and gloves to shape rough stone, modern Freemasons meet to build friendships, personal growth and a stronger society rather than physical structures.

Why Become a Freemason?

Why Become a Freemason?

People join Freemasonry for many reasons, but most stay because of the friendships they form – genuine, lasting connections that support you through all of life’s milestones. As a Freemason, you meet people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences, brought together by shared values and a desire to grow.

For more than 300 years, our members have come from every walk of life – business leaders, professionals, tradesmen and craftsmen – reflecting every race, religion and background. This diversity is one of our greatest strengths.

Many are drawn to the unique traditions and ceremonies of Freemasonry, which contain timeless lessons about personal growth, integrity and living a meaningful, responsible life. Charity is central to who we are, and Freemasons take pride in supporting those in need within our communities.

Above all, we enjoy ourselves. We meet, eat, share stories, and build friendships that last a lifetime. Freemasonry offers a sense of belonging, purpose and camaraderie that is hard to find elsewhere.

Why is Freemasonry Often Misunderstood  and What Can We Do About It?

Why is Freemasonry Often Misunderstood  and What Can We Do About It?

Misunderstandings about Freemasonry come from a mix of history, culture and simple lack of information. For centuries, some governments and institutions viewed Freemasons with suspicion, which encouraged myths and conspiracy theories. Popular culture has also played a role, often portraying Freemasons as mysterious or secretive for dramatic effect.

In reality, Freemasonry values privacy, not secrecy. Traditions are kept private to preserve their meaning, not to hide anything from the public. Today, lodges are more open than ever – many offer public tours, members attend community events, and even ceremony books can be bought online.

The best way to counter misconceptions is through openness and honest conversation. When members speak clearly about what Freemasonry truly is -friendship, personal growth and charitable work – old clichés fade. Over time, increased visibility and transparency continue to break down the idea that Freemasonry is a secretive or exclusive organisation.

What Happens at a Lodge Meeting?

What Happens at a Lodge Meeting?

Lodge meetings are usually divided into two enjoyable and meaningful parts. The first covers the essential running of the Lodge – welcoming and voting on new members, planning events, and sharing updates on our charitable work. It’s a chance for everyone to stay connected and involved.

The second part focuses on our ceremonies, which mark important milestones such as welcoming new members or installing a new Master and his officers. These ceremonies follow three traditional degrees, each with its own unique symbolism and sense of occasion, and many members find them inspiring and memorable.

But Lodge nights are also social occasions. After the meeting, members sit down together to share a meal, enjoy good company, and strengthen the bonds of friendship.

Beyond the Lodge room, Freemasonry offers plenty of opportunities to get involved – from community fundraising and volunteering to a wide range of events where spouses, partners and families are warmly welcomed. It’s a community that extends far beyond the meeting itself.
