Freemasonry FAQ
Freemasonry FAQ
We are always happy to answer questions, provide guidance, and welcome good men who wish to better themselves and contribute positively to society.
What to expect as a new member
Joining Freemasonry is straightforward. All it takes is genuine curiosity and an aspiration for self-improvement. Freemasonry “makes good men better men”
What Makes Transvaal Jubilee Lodge Different?
Transvaal Jubilee Lodge combines:
• Strong Masonic tradition under UGLE
• A welcoming, modern lodge culture
• Diverse membership across professions and backgrounds
• A focus on growth, mentorship and genuine connection
We are actively revitalising Freemasonry for a new generation seeking purpose, belonging and integrity.
How Often Do You Meet?
Transvaal Jubilee Lodge meets six times per year, on the fourth Monday of:
January, March, May, July, September and November.
Meetings begin promptly at 19:00, and members are encouraged to arrive early. After meetings, members gather for a Festive Board – a social meal that strengthens friendships and welcomes visitors.
What Can I Expect as a New Member?
Joining Freemasonry is a personal journey, taken at your own pace. You do not need prior knowledge, family connections, or an invitation – only genuine curiosity and a desire to grow as a person.
You will also need a black formal suit (2 piece), a white formal shirt, a black tie, black socks and formal black shoes – aprons for the initial degrees are provided by the Lodge.
Your journey typically includes:
An informal first conversation
You will meet with members of the Lodge in a relaxed, private setting. This is simply a chance to ask questions, understand who we are, and see if Freemasonry feels right for you.
Clear guidance at every step
The process is explained openly and honestly. There are no hidden expectations or surprises.
Mentorship and support
From the start, you are supported by experienced members who guide you through your development. You are never expected to figure things out alone.
Freemasonry has often been described as an organisation that “makes good men better” through reflection, discipline, and shared values.
Freemasonry on the Internet
The internet is full of misconceptions, conspiracy theories, and outright fiction about Freemasonry. Much of what you’ll find online ranges from sensationalised speculation to deliberate misinformation designed to attract clicks rather than inform. If you are genuinely curious about Freemasonry, be sceptical of dramatic claims, secret agenda theories, or anything that sounds more like a thriller plot than reality.
The best way to learn the truth is to speak directly with actual Freemasons or visit official Masonic websites. Don’t let internet myths shape your understanding of an organisation that’s been around for centuries with transparent principles and public constitutions.
Do You Need an Invitation to Join?
No. One of the most common myths is that Freemasonry is invitation-only.
In reality, you can ask to join. This principle is often summed up as: “You can ask one to be one.”
If Freemasonry interests you, you are welcome to make contact with a Lodge directly and begin a conversation.
Is Freemasonry a Secret Society?
Freemasonry is not a secret society.
It is best described as a society with some traditional private elements.
Members openly acknowledge their membership, Lodge locations are public, and the organisation’s rules and structure are freely available. The only aspects kept private are traditional signs and symbolic elements used within ceremonies — similar to customs preserved in many long-standing organisations.
There is nothing hidden or sinister about Freemasonry’s values, aims, or activities.
Freemasonry and Politics
Freemasonry is non-political, and the discussion of politics at Masonic meetings is forbidden.
Before You Apply: Important Things to Understand
Freemasonry is not:
• A business networking club
• A way to gain financial advantage
• A shortcut to social status
In fact, applicants are asked to confirm that they expect no material or financial benefit from membership. Freemasonry offers personal growth, moral development, fellowship, and service – not commercial gain.
Freemasonry and Religion
Freemasonry isn’t a religion and doesn’t try to be one. It’s open to men of all faiths, the only requirement is that you believe in a ‘Higher Being”. Whether you are a Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, or follow another religion, you are welcome. You will continue practising your own faith as you always have. To respect the diverse beliefs of all members, religious debate isn’t part of Lodge meetings.
Who Can Join?
You will need to meet these requirements:
- You must believe in a “Higher Being” – regardless of your specific faith tradition (whether Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, or another religion), a belief in God is essential.
- Be of good character – A clean criminal record and law-abiding nature is paramount.
- Genuine interest – You must apply voluntarily, without pressure from others.
- Legal status – South African Citizen or Permanent Resident with a valid ID.
- Age and gender – Male aged 21 or older.
The Application Process
- You will want to attend regularly, so choose a Lodge close to where you live or work.
- Two Lodge members familiar with you will need to endorse your application, serving as Proposer and Seconder to attest to your character.
- You have a clear and realistic understanding of what Freemasonry genuinely provides to its members, as well as what it does not promise or deliver.
Attend an Informal Interview
Our Members will want to ensure:
- Your family knows about and supports your decision.
- You grasp the basic principles and can commit to living by them.
- You can attend meetings regularly.
- You are okay with the membership fees and charitable contributions that come with joining – you will get all the details about these during your interview. There are also dining fees for the Festive Board after meetings, but they’re reasonably priced and everyone pays them.
How Long Does It Take
Within a few months, Lodge members will vote on your application. If accepted, you’ll receive your initiation date.
Your Choice, Always
- You can withdraw your application at any time before initiation – no questions asked. Everything shared during the process remains strictly confidential.
- Even after joining, membership is entirely voluntary. You’re free to resign whenever you wish.
- You are requested to attend all Lodge meetings (6 per year) and ‘visit’ other Lodges when possible – this is how you gain the knowledge to better yourself. However, we understand that your Family and your Work take precedence
